Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical effect and safety of the warm-removing obstruction method, one of Hes acupuncture-moxibustion three removing obstruction methods, in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) of type 2 diabetes. Methods A total of 57 patients with DPN were randomly divided into observation group with 29 patients and control group with 28 patients. All patients were given basic treatment, including health education on diabetes, diabetic diet, and exercise, combined with oral hypoglycemic agents and/or subcutaneously injected insulin, and anticoagulants and vasodilators were prohibited during treatment. In addition, the patients in the observation group were given acupuncture using the warm-removing obstruction method, and those in the control group were given superficial acupuncture at sham acupoints. Treatment was given twice a week, and the course of treatment was 8 consecutive weeks for both groups. Total symptom score of DPN and Michigan Diabetic Neuropathy Score (MDNS) were evaluated before treatment and after 8 weeks of treatment, and adverse reactions were evaluated after 8 weeks of treatment. Results Both groups had significant reductions in total symptom score and MDNS after treatment (P<0.05). Compared with the control group after treatment, the observation group had a significantly greater reduction in MDNS (P<0.05), while there was no significant difference in the reduction in total symptom score between the two groups (P>0.05). The observation group had a significantly better clinical outcome than the control group (P<0.05). No adverse reactions were observed in both groups. Conclusion Hes acupuncture-moxibustion three removing obstruction methods can significantly improve the clinical symptoms of DPN, with little adverse effect.
