Objective To compile the English version of Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire (CCMQ), and to promote its application in non-Asians as a tool for body constitution assessment. Methods The Chinese version of CCMQ was translated into the English version following the standardized procedure for cross-culture compiling of questionnaire in foreign languages. The translated questionnaire was preliminarily tested in Caucasians who came from the United States or Canada and resided in Beijing. The Likert scale was used to determine the level of understanding of items in the English version of CCMQ among subjects. The questionnaire was then modified based on the preliminary survey results, and finally underwent reverse translation and revision. Results In the 60 subjects, 88.33% fully understood the preliminarily translated CCMQ. Among the 60 items in the Chinese version of CCMQ, 44 were confirmed by forward translation, and 16 were modified by preliminary survey, revision, and reverse translation, which finally contributed to the initial formation of the English version of CCMQ. Conclusion The participation of professionals with different culture backgrounds is required for cross-culture compiling of CCMQ, which not only has to follow the principle of questionnaire compiling, but also needs to pay attention to the common problems among different cultures. The preliminary compiling of the English version of CCMQ provides a research tool for large-scale CCMQ surveys in European and American populations.
